Behind the Brand: Sloane by AFMKTG for Holland Partner Group
South Lake Union has no shortage of apartments, but few make a lasting impression.
That was the challenge in front of us with Sloane, a 43-story tower rising in Seattle's South Denny Triangle. The project brings 442 residential homes and ground-floor retail to a neighborhood defined almost entirely by the Amazon ecosystem, with views of the Space Needle, Puget Sound, Elliott Bay, and Lake Union. Plenty of demand in the area. Plenty of competition too. Our job, working alongside developer Holland Partner Group, was to make this building the one people talked about.
Starting With Immersion
Every project begins the same way for us: immersion. Before a single name is on the table, we study the architecture, the interior design, the history of the project, and the developer's intention for it.
With Sloane, that immersion turned up something distinctive right away. The building's footprint is unusually fragmented, full of angles that give the exterior a faceted, almost sculptural quality, like a rough-cut jewel or textured marble. Raw, yet refined.
That quality carried into the interiors. The design team built in concealed light sources and unexpected angles that create moments of visual intrigue at every turn, the kind of experience that feels like walking through an M.C. Escher drawing. You never quite know what's coming around the corner, and that's exactly the point.
Two Creative Directions
That immersion led to two strong creative concepts.
The first was Jewelry Box. Seattle is the Emerald City, and Washington is known for its gemstones. Combined with the faceted, jewel-like quality of the building's exterior, this direction had an obvious and compelling logic.
The second was Folded Light & Geometry. The building is full of angles, both outside and in, and the interior design leans heavily on how light plays across those surfaces. This direction leaned all the way into that.
Both concepts, alongside eight name candidates, were presented to the developer. One name stood out immediately.
The Story Behind Sloane
At first glance, Sloane reads as simply a name: slightly feminine, refined, and effortless. What you may not know is the history behind that name.
In the 1980s and 90s, Sloane Square in London's Chelsea neighborhood was where the coolest, most confident crowd gathered, Princess Diana and her circle among them. They earned a nickname of their own: the Sloanies. It became shorthand for a certain kind of person and a certain kind of neighborhood: confident, established, and excellent without ever needing to say so.
That's the energy we wanted for this address in Seattle. Understated excellence. Sophistication without the flash. A building that's chic and effortless, that doesn't announce itself loudly, and draws people in simply because it's excellent.
Building the Identity System
With the name and creative direction set, the work moved into full brand development.
Two wordmark directions emerged as front-runners. The one we ultimately selected runs vertically, a choice that works especially well against the building's own verticality at street level. It's intriguing, a little irreverent, and still fully legible top to bottom.
More importantly, it tied directly back to the building itself. The mark was inspired by the reflective ceiling plans from the interior design, with actual elements pulled from those architectural plans into the brand mark itself. That connection now runs throughout the signage across the property.
In parallel with the visual identity, we built out the full brand system: the brand story, the name's origin story, taglines, website copy, social media messaging, and sales scripts. Every piece is cohesive, reflecting the neighborhood context, the developer's vision, the interior and exterior design, and what the future resident, the Sloanie, actually wants: a sophisticated, understated address that supports the way they live.
Brand as Environment, Story, and Experience
Sloane is a clear example of what we mean when we say a brand isn't a logo. It's architecture, history, geography, and intention, all working together to create something that feels inevitable once it's finished, even though it took real work to get there.
We're proud to have partnered with Holland Partner Group on this project, and even prouder of what Sloane has become.
